Pros and Cons of Additions/New Construction
When do I add to my home and when do I sell that home and buy a new one? There is no easy answer since one has to look at many factors.
If you plan an addition to your home you must look at your neighborhood. What is the age of the neighborhood? Will you overbuild? If you do you may have the most expensive home in the area and may not get the return on your money.
Will the addition look like an addition when it’s completed?
Can you still get the brick or siding to match?
What about your lot? You must be able to meet the front, side and rear setback required by the applicable city zoning department.
Will the addition affect the lot in a good or adverse way?
What about the cost of the addition? Most people underestimate the cost of construction.
Or will it be better to sell and with the equity move into a newer neighborhood, allowing a greater return on your investment?
If you can answer favorably to the questions about an addition you should investigate the possibility of adding to your home.
If not maybe you should look at building a new home.
