Moving Checklist
Change of Address Information
- Post office-change of address: www.usps.com or visit local post office
- Credit card companies
- Brokerage firms/lawyers
- Utility companies
- Doctors, other health-care providers
- Veterinarian
- Magazine/Newspaper subscriptions
- Friends and relatives
Banking and Insurance
- Arrange to have funds transferred; for check-cashing in new city
- Notify insurance companies of new location for coverages on all policies: Life, Health, Auto
Utility Companies
- Notify gas, electric, water, telephone, cable, internet, garbage of last day. (Request refunds on any deposits)
Medical/Dental/Prescription Histories
- Obtain copies of medical records and forward to new provider
- Ask doctor/dentist for referrals
- Transfer prescriptions
- Veterinary records
Other Reminders
- Empty freezer and plan on using household items up you won’t move
- Defrost freezer and clean out refrigerator
- Clean rugs/floors/clothing before moving
- Check with your moving company about insurance for your items, packing and unpacking labor, arrival, methods and times of payments, shipping documents
- Find out about regulations for pets: licenses, vaccinations, tags
- Have boxes you are packing labeled and numbered. Pack and clearly mark an “essentials” box that you will need right away
On Moving Day
- Carry important documents and jewelry personally on moving day
- Double check closets, drawers and shelves throughout the home to be sure they are empty
- Leave all old keys with Agent or new owner
- Let close friends/relatives know your scheduled route and arrival time at new residence
- Plan for transporting of pets
At New Home
- Check on telephone, gas, electricity, water, garbage, cable service at new residence
- Check pilot light on stove, hot water heater and furnace at new home
- Check with post office on mail that is being held
- Visit city and register for voting as well as new address recorded on driver license or register for new driver license if different state
- Register car in new state
- Obtain inspection stickers and transfer motor club membership
- Register family in new place of worship
- Register children in school
- Arrange for medical services: dentist, doctor, veterinarian
